Pat Carey undecided on Sydney as star returnsFinding a way for diminutive mare Influential Miss to increase her value beyond the racetrack won’t be trainer Pat Carey’s only focus this week.
Mornington-based Carey is weighing up a black-type option in Sydney or a run-of-the-mill Sandown race for Influential Miss, a Melbourne Cup day winner at Flemington last year.

He is also preparing to welcome surprise BMW Stakes winner Cedarberg back to his stable to start a run towards the spring Cups.

“You have to have a spring horse in by now because they (usually) have to be up and racing in August,” Carey said.

Cedarberg was dispatched to the spelling paddock after his midfield placing in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 23.

Three weeks earlier he reached a career high with his Group One win over the Lloyd Williams-owned stablemates Mourayan and Linton in the BMW Stakes at Rosehill.

Carey has tentatively pencilled in a return to the scene of his biggest success with Influential Miss in the $100,000 Listed Winter Cup (2400m) on Saturday.

“I’m not sure yet (if she’ll run in Sydney),” Carey said.

“I put in a nomination because sometimes up in Sydney you get these small fields in staying races.

“It’s a Listed race and she’s a small mare so getting some black-type would really help her as a broodmare.”

Influential Miss made a name for herself with her Melbourne Cup day victory over Well Rounded on a soft Flemington track.

She has been winless in five autumn outings but Carey said he was taken by her last start Flemington run over 2000m.

“The way she got to the line made me think she is going to get further,” he said.

“Whether 2400 (metres) is too far, I’m not too sure.”

Rain is forecast for Sydney for most of the week and a sodden Rosehill could be a clincher for Carey to try his luck at Rosehill.

“Being by (noted wet track sire) Carnegie, she loves the wet,” he said.
